2018 rookie of the year Sean Herlihy returns for at this point at least a part season campaign for 2019 off the back of a year which saw huge improvement in both driving ability and consistency and he has eyes on moving further up again.
A second generation Herlihy in MG Racing joined the 2018 season after spending 30 years watching on the sidelines and immediately made an impact in the modern field which saw him take a podium spot in the class overall for last season and take rookie of the year in what was a competitive field.
Sean goes on to explain, “the first couple of rounds it was all a bit intimidating and scary, I probably didn’t really enjoy it but by the time we got to the second last round I started to find my feet and I had quite a lot of fun and Sandown Historic was just fantastic, I had a ball and racing against a lot of people who just have so much fun but race so hard, Greg White, Alister Ondarchie, Henk (Zwartaveen) and those boys it was just so much fun”. Herlihy plans to get a few rounds for this year but rules out for now a full season, “I have a bit going on so the plan is to do 3 or 4 rounds where it fits in so probably the opening couple at least but we will see how things go, I don’t think a full year is on the cards at the moment”.
The Modern field will be competitive again with Jim Dodd locked in the for the opening round while Tony Vollebregt and Andrew Watson will also run and David Vernall expected to join mid year. The sole MG F in the field as well doesn’t deter Sean, “it’s cool as it’s different, I am still learning and having a bit of fun but we will see how things go hopefully we get a bit faster and might challenge for a class win at one of the rounds, that’s the dream at the moment!”
The car hasn’t had any updates at this point, “just want to learn, I am not thinking about speed just yet although definitely thinking for the future we might have to look at a few things but for now I just want to learn so we might throw some tyres at it but that’s all”.
The Modern field at the opening round will see at least 5 entries and there isn’t a stand out that should clean up.
