Family ties at Winton FoS

It’s rare to see father and son in the same race in motorsport these days such is the diverse options for categories to race and costs involved but for MG Racing we will see not 1, not 2 but 3 father and son teams on track.

Leading the charge is father and son combination of Glen and Ian Wood, Glen is in his third full season of MG Racing having started with a couple of sporadic appearances before two seasons in a MG TF Cup car, this season he has been at the helm of Phillip Chester’s MG C Sebring V8, a car well known within the series and Glen also is leading the 2015 Championship after a strong couple of rounds. Father Ian has not been active for a while, his last major motorsport foray being the now defunct Commodore Cup in 1995 where he won the debut race and finished 3rd in the championship before retiring to focus on son Dale’s motorsport (Dale now a regular V8 supercar driver). Ian will be at the helm of Glen’s old MG TF Cup car for Winton and you never know he may just do a few more rounds!

The second combination is from the well known MG family the Herlihy’s, father Michael is a former champion from the year 2000 in his wife’s MG B but for Winton will be stepping into an MG F. Having successfully conquered south America recently in an MG B GT he is hoping to get the racing bug back after a few seasons off. Making his debut racing is son Sean who will be behind the wheel of an MG ZR 160, Sean has been involved in MG’s with his family at racing and national meetings since he was born and has more recently been helping prepare a few cars including Peter Rose and Don Mazzone’s MG B’s and Paul Vernall’s MG ZR 160. The two might even end up battling on track at Winton

The third combination is former MG Racing Captain David Vernall, having been around for nearly as long as Mike Herlihy and having competed in an MG B he has recently had a hiatus from racing and is usually seen running our races as Clerk of Course. David will be driving his son Paul’s MG ZR 160 which Paul has successfully piloted for the past 4 seasons while Paul will be driving another MG ZR courtesy of a deal with car owner Jason Holmes to allow father and son to race together.

To have all three on track at the same time is something dreams are made of and a testament to MG Racing and it’s competitors, make sure to drop by and say hello if you see any of them!
