Adrian Akhurst will make a return at Sydney Motorsport Park as he assess a part time campaign for the rest of 2019.
Akhurst has spent the last couple of seasons campaigning a Lola T332 Formula 5000 race car in both Australia and the USA but admitted both cost and the enjoyment get’s a little lost in the seriousness of 5000 competition. “Obviously there is a big cost difference between a any of the MG’s and a F5000 and while I love the 5000 and the rawness it just add’s up so much so I am looking to come back and do a bit of MG Racing which is a little more cost effective”. The 5000’s require a crew to get the most of the car where Akhurst said he can run his MG on his own, “the ZT really suits me and I can prep it and run it on my own without too much fuss, the 5000 really requires 2-4 guys on it all weekend and you have to really focus on your driving, they are an animal that requires respect”.
Akhurst will return in the MG ZT V8 that was originally built for the Nürburgring by MG Sport and Racing, “once we started getting on top of the car it has been a lot of fun, and it really suits me, big V8 up front, rear wheel drive, and its just a lot of fun to drive. With some luck we will be where Andrew in the ZR Judd is and it will be a lot of fun”.
Akhurst is also intending to bring to friend Gary Baxter in a MG TF Cup car, “Gary has run with us in the ZS Touring Car before and he enjoyed the racing, we just don’t have the cars ready but he will jump in one of the cup cars for the weekend and have some fun, he should still be just inside the top 10”
Akhurst hopes it may lead to a couple more outings across 2019, “who knows, maybe Sandown Historic if we don’t run the F5000 and maybe Winton mid year but we will just see how things go at Sydney first. It’s going to be a big field and it is great to see the series in such good strength”
