Gucciardo leads after Round 1

Round 1 of the 2018 Hobson Stores MG Road Racing Championship threw up lots of variables as we prepare for Round 2 at Phillip Island in just under 4 weeks.

Unlikely victor Vince Gucciardo was involved in an unfortunate accident on Friday while debuting his MG C Sebring V8 after being taken out by an errant Porsche GT3, after nearly throwing in the towel for the weekend he fronted up Saturday in the trusty old steed from 2017, his MG TF LE500 and has come away from Round 1 leading the championship.

“I couldn’t of imagined this after Friday, there is a long way to go but a good start to the year and will see how we progress at round 2, it certainly turned my weekend around” Gucciardo commented.

Gucciardo holds a slender 2 point margin to Chris Gidney and Richard Milligan who both are tied on 85 points, Milligan showing consistency helps despite not having the fastest V8 he finished all the races and is in the hunt for the championship.

A surprise 4th is Tony Vollebregt, in his first full season he has come out of the opening round in a really strong position while David Anderson rounds out the top 5.

Phil Chester languishes in 7th, the reigning champion is 23 points off the series lead after a DNF in round 1 and looking to push forward at Phillip Island “we have done a lot of work between rounds and hopefully the issues that plagued us at Round 1 are gone and I can get the championship back on track” Chester noted.  Robin Bailey won 2x races but didn’t start one and lies 9th heading into round 2 and Paul Vernall after a strong start a DNS leaves him in 10th outright.
